The Consell de Mallorca and the concessionaire company TIRME have formalised modification number 5 of the concession contract that will allow the construction project of a composting plant for the organic fraction of municipal waste (FORM) located in the Mallorcan municipality of Llucmajor to be launched.

This agreement has been able to materialise after the island institution has approved the modification of the contract with the company, by which the island institution will contribute 4.9 million euros to the project financed through the European Union's Next Generation recovery and resilience funds. The total investment planned for this treatment plant reaches 30 million euros

The signing of the contract was attended by the second vice-president and Minister of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, and the General Manager of Tirme, Antonio Pons. The President of Tirme, Rafael Guinea, also attended.

New composting plant in Llucmajor

The new composting plant will provide a strategic infrastructure for better management of the island's municipal waste, specifically the organic fraction. In addition to committing to composting, the aim is to decentralise this service so that the treatment of the FORM, which cannot be compacted and therefore does not pass through the transfer stations, takes place closer to the production points. In this way, transport and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere are reduced.

The new plant in Llucmajor will have the capacity to treat up to 21,000 tonnes of organic fraction per year.

The Consell de Mallorca declared the public construction work of the Llucmajor composting plant to be of general interest and is declared a strategic project by the Government of the CAIB.
