Carbon Footprint Verification 2023

09/04/24 - News

At TIRME we are aware of the importance of the services we offer to society, finding ourselves at the end of the life cycle of resources, with an important role within circular economy policies, maximising the use of waste in an efficient way, to transform it into resources, reducing the consumption of natural resources and achieving zero waste. Through goal ME03 Develop the Circular Economy and Decarbonisation of our Strategic Plan 2022-2025, we align ourselves with the European Union's energy and climate change objectives. This is why we have designed a plan of measures on energy efficiency and decarbonisation that allows us to plan our progress towards a low-carbon energy model. The plan includes measures to improve energy efficiency and the use of resources, such as raising people's awareness, adapting to new technologies, efficient lighting, modernising our production processes, sustainable mobility, digitalisation and investments in renewable energies.

It is important to highlight that Tirme contributes almost half of the renewable energy generated on the islands to the Balearic Islands' electricity system and comes from the use of energy from domestic and similar waste. To a lesser extent, but just as important, is the generation of energy from biogas obtained at the Methanisation Plant, and from our own photovoltaic energy generators, which we self-consume at the facilities and which is 100% renewable energy.

All this effort translates into the reduction, year after year, of the organisation's Carbon Footprint. Since 2016, we have reduced GHG emissions from our activity by 17%, obtaining the "Calculo y Reduzco" seal awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. In the recently verified financial year 2023, we have achieved a reduction in the GHG emissions intensity indicator per tonne of waste treated of 2.3% compared to 2022.
